Admission Criteria: Adults

The following criteria are evaluated when considering an adult for admission to residential treatment:

    1. Adults who have been unable, through alcohol, other drug or other addictions and many interrelated problems including mental health concerns, to function effectively in society.
    2. Adults whose lifestyles are such that they are regarded as having a living problem by their families, themselves, and/or their community and are sincerely interested in changing.
    3. Adults, of all genders, of all ages, race, color or creed, with or without dependents.
    4. Adults who have an ability to absorb and respond and carry out basic work routines.
    5. Recognizing the population abusing substances are frequently over-medicated and psychiatrically complex, BHF allows adults on prescribed mood-altering or psychotropic substances to be admitted provided they meet one of the following conditions:
      1. A medical condition such as epilepsy is present.
      2. Individuals are under the care of a psychiatrist and meet all other admission criteria. Such cases would include those whose prescription modification is contraindicated due to mental health concerns. A complete psychiatric report, satisfactory in form and content to the Behavioural Health Foundation, must be submitted with the Application for Admission.
    6. Adults who do not have histories or present charges of sexual assault, arson or crimes against children. Persons charged with or who have histories of all other criminal offences are eligible to apply for admission.
    7. BHF will accept individuals on judicial interim release if they meet all other admission criteria. If they leave the program prior to completion they will not be accepted in the future on judicial interim release, except under the discretion of the Executive Director.
    8. Only those who are able to physically negotiate the facilities may be accepted.
    9. When bed space is available, the first available person on the waiting list will be allotted that space, dependent on receipt of proper documentation (ie. application for admissions, confirmation of financial arrangements, etc.). Preference is given to pregnant women and persons awaiting release from detoxification facilities. Persons who cannot be accommodated due to lengthy waiting lists are referred to medical or crisis care as necessary
